National Carers Week 2016 (6th to the 12th June)
What Wirral did to celebrate our 40,000 unpaid Carers

The theme for National Carers Week this year was Building Carer Friendly Communities. The Agencies for Carers Executive (ACE), who are a group of voluntary sector agencies who deliver support to Carers and vulnerable groups in our community and Wired Carer Connectors (the Health and Social Care lead providers in supporting Wirral Carers) worked together in ensuring Wirral’s 40,000 Carers received information, support and some recognition for the valuable work they do - day in day out. We also delivered our Carer Awareness Information Sessions to professionals in health, ensuring they know how to identify Carers and who to refer them to for help. Please call the Wired Carers Helpline during office hours on 0151670 0777 or email cws@wired.me.uk for further information.

Monday 6th June

The week began with an interview on Radio Merseyside, Tony Snell Breakfast Show with the Carer Connectors and a Wirral carer giving an overview of what Carers Week is about and some of the issues Wirral Carers experience. Later that morning at Wirral University Teaching Hospital, we launched National Carers Week with Wirral Mayor- Councillor Pat Hackett and Lady Mayoress - Elaine Hackett, senior hospital staff and members of the Agencies for Carers Executive and guests representing the Department of Adult Social Services (Carol Jones) and Wirral Borough Council (Carers Champion - Councillor Angie Davies). The ACE members who represent their agencies present on the day includes; Barnardo’s Young Carers, AGE UK, Advocacy in Wirral, Lonsdale Trust, Wirral Change, Carers and Families Group (CRI), Role On (former Carers), Local Solutions, Health Watch, MENCAP, Wirral PALS and Family Tree. Many thanks to them all for their continued and valued support to Carers. The Wired Carer Connectors hosted an information point all day.
Tuesday 7th June
Wirral Narrowboat Community Trust and Wired Carers Support Services (Wirral and Warrington) facilitated a cruise a day for the week for 144 Carers and the people they care for and 10 Young Carers. They cruised from Christleton to Tattonstall in Cheshire. With special thanks to Sainsbury’s Upton and Tesco Bidston who provided light refreshments which were much needed in the hot weather.
Wednesday 8th June
Wirral Change (who are partners within the ACE group) celebrated Carers Week with a fun filled event including Zumba, holistic therapies, cultural food and mini health checks. The Carer Connectors provided advice and information.
Thursday 9th June
Wired Carer Connectors delivered Carer Awareness Information sessions to CWP staff at Spring View Clatterbridge Hospital and had an information point at Fir Trees Restaurant, Spring View main entrance and at the Stein Centre at St Catherine’s Hospital along with Advocacy in Wirral (who are partners within the ACE group). The Carer Connectors were also interviewed on Clatterbridge Hospital Radio explaining what Carers Week is and who to contact.
Friday 10th June
The Wired Carer Connectors and ACE members hosted a celebration of National Carers Week at Wirral University Hospital with special guests; Wirral Mayor Councillor Pat Hackett and Lady Mayoress Elaine Hackett, Wirral Memories Choir, Everton Football Club Ambassador Ian Snodin, David Allison (CEO WUTH) and David Maguire (CEO Wired). Everton Football Club has supported Carers Week and has promised to help raise awareness of Carers issues.

The week was a real success and special thanks to all of our partners, guests and venues for helping us to ensure Wirral Carers feel a little more recognised, valued and supported. Please contact us on the Wired Carers Helpline during office hours on 0151 670 0777 or email cws@wired.me.uk

More than three million people
juggle care with work, however
the significant demands of
caring mean that 1 in 5 carers
are forced to give up work

Every day another 6,000 people
take on a caring responsibility
– that equals over two million
people each year.

Carers often neglect their own
personal health needs because
of their caring role so this is an
opportunity for you to have some time out for yourself, whether you are a male or a female Carer.
